Animal-like protists Flashcards
1
Q
Animal-like protists
A
Are heterotrophs & are able to move around in their environment to find food. They are also unicellular - unlike animals.
2
Q
4 groups of animal-like protists
A
Protists w/ flagella, protists w/ pseudopods, protists w/ cilia, & sporozoans
3
Q
Protists w/ flagella (zooflagellates)
A
- They move by beating their long whip-like structures called flagella
- Some feed on other protists & some live in the bodies of other organisms
- Some are beneficial to their host & others are parasites
- They are the primary component in the marine food chain
4
Q
Protists w/ pseudopods
A
- They move by cytoplasmic streaming - creating finger-like projections of cytoplasm called pseudopods.
- The pseudopods are used for movement & obtaining food through endocytosis.
- Eg. Amoebas
5
Q
2 Amoebas that cause disease
A
Naegleria (causes amoebic meningitis) & Entamoeba (causes amoebic dysentery). Both diseases are found in the tropics & in countries with poor sanitation.
6
Q
Amoebas are:
A
Major consumers of bacteria in soil ecosystems, ensuring nutrient regeneration & continued functioning of the ecosystem.
