Nutrition Flashcards
Macronutrients
Needed in large amounts every day. Eg. Carbs, lipids, & proteins
Micronutrients
Needed in small amounts every day. Eg. Vitamins & minerals
Organic Nutrients
Contain the element carbon & are produced by living organisms such as plants & animals.
Inorganic Nutrients
derived from non-living sources.
Polymers
- Large molecules found in animals & plants.
- They consist of long chains of smaller repeating molecules called monomers.
Monomers
Long chains of small repeating molecules
Anabolism
- When monomers bond together to form polymers
- Its a chemical reaction in which simple molecules are built into more complex ones.
What do polymers include?
Complex carbohydrates, proteins, & fatty acids.
What is the main function of macronutrients?
To provide energy
What are carbohydrates?
Organic compounds that contain carbon, hydrogen, & oxygen
What are the 3 categories of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharide, Disaccharide, & Polysaccharide
Why are carbohydrates important?
They are important short-term energy storage molecules
