Q

How does oxygen get from the atmosphere into a cell in your body?

A

You breathe in oxygen & it goes into your lungs, where it crosses into the blood. From the blood, it travels through the body & into a body cell (internal respiration).

Q

When we exhale, our breathe contains approx 80% nitrogen, 17% oxygen, & 3% carbon dioxide. Explain how mouth to mouth resuscitation provides sufficient oxygen to an unconscious person.

A

The normal air we breathe contains approx 21% oxygen & 0.04% carbon dioxide. The air you blow into a victims mouth thus contains less but it is still 17% oxygen, which is more than enough to supply the needs of respiration.
