Protists w/ cilia (often called ciliates)
A
- They move by beating tiny-hair structures called cilia
- They have a skeleton-like covering called pellicle, made of polysaccharides
- They have a mouth like opening at 1 end of their bodies called the oral groove

What is the most common species of ciliates?
A
- The freshwater Paramecium
- It’s shaped like the bottom of a shoe
- They can reproduce sexually or asexually
- It has 1 large macronucleus & 1 smaller micronucleus

What are the 2 types of nuclei that ciliates have?
A
- A single large marcronucleus (operates as the director of the cell’s activities - like a little brain)
- & 1 or more smaller micronucleus (used for reproduction)

What is the only member of the ciliate family that causes human disease?
A
- Balantidium coli - causes severe diarrhea
