Fungi-like protists Flashcards
1
Q
4 ways humans cause habitat loss
A
deforestation due to logging, climate change, excessive grazing, over fishing, & toxic pollution
2
Q
Fungus-like protists
A
- Heterotrophs that absorb nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter
- They can live alone but often live in large colonies
- They have cell walls made of cellulose but aren’t true fungi b/c they lack chitin in their cells walls
- They reproduce by forming spores
- They are able to move at some point in their lives
3
Q
What do fungus-like protists do?
A
- They are important recyclers of organic matter - they help things rot
- They break down dead organisms by releasing digestive enzymes into them, which then release materials that are useful to other living organisms into the surrounding environment
- Dark rich topsoil is the result of their decomposition activity
4
Q
What are the 2 types of fungus-like protists?
A
oomycota & slime molds
5
Q
Oomycota
A
- Include: water molds, white rust, & downy mildews
6
Q
Water molds
A
Are decomposers that grow as cottony masses on dead algae & animals. (they look like tiny threads w/ a white fuzzy covering)
7
Q
White rust & downy mildews
A
are close relatives of water molds but usually live on land as parasites of plants. (eg. Irish potato famine)
8
Q
Slime molds
A
occurs all over the world & with over 900 species
