Variety of Living Organisms Flashcards
1
Q
What is the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
A
- Prokaryotic cells do not have membrane-bound organelles like mitochondria, vacuoles. Eukaryotic Cells do.
- Eukaryotic Cells have a membrane-bound nucleus, prokaryotic cells do not.
2
Q
What are the characteristics of plants
A
- They are multi-cellular
- They get their food from photosynthesis
- They contain a large, central and permanent vacuole.
- They store carbohydrates as starch or sucrose.
3
Q
What are the characteristics of animals
A
- Multi-cellular
- Contain a nucleus, but do not have a cell wall, chloroplasts or a large permanent vacuole.
- They get their food from feeding on organic substances, such as: other organisms.
- They store carbohydrates as glycogen.
4
Q
What are the characteristics of Fungi
A
- Multi-cellular with a mycelium of thread like structures called hyphae.
- They have a nucleus and cell walls made out of chitin
- They feed by saprotophic or parasitic
- May store carbohydrates as glycogen.
5
Q
What are the characteristics of Protoctists.
A
- Unicellular
- They have a nucleus and may have cell walls and chloroplasts, meaning that some protoctists are able to carry out photosynthesis.
6
Q
Features of a bacteria cell
A
- Unicellular
- They have a cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, plasmids.
- Some can carry out photosynthesis but mainly feed on dead organisms.
7
Q
What is a pathogen
A
A pathogen is an organisms that can cause a variety of diseases.
8
Q
Name some pathogens
A
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Fungi
- Protoctists.
9
Q
Features of viruses
A
- They are smaller than bacteria.
- They are parasitic, meaning that they reproduce themselves inside a host.
- They have a protein coat, used to protect the Genetic code that is stored inside it.
- They are able to infect all living cells.
- They are not considered to be living cells because they do not carry out living processes, except for reproduction, but that also requires a host.
10
Q
What are the differences between the cell structures of a virus and a bacteria
A
- Viruses do not have an flagellum like a bacteria.
- Bacteria only contains DNA, whereas, viruses may contain DNA or RNA.
- Viruses have a protein coat, whereas bacteria does not.
- Viruses are smaller in size compared to bacteria.
- Not all bacteria are pathogenic, while all viruses are pathogenic.
- Viruses do not contain plasmids.
11
Q
What are organs
A
These are made from tissues and perform a specific function
12
Q
What are the differences between Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
A
- Eukaryotic Cells have a membrane-bound nucleus, while prokaryotic cells do not.
- Eukaryotic Cells have membrane-bound organelles, whereas Prokaryotic cells do not.
- Eukaryotic Cells do not have plasmids but some prokaryotic cells do.
