Variation and speciation vocabulary. Flashcards
Gene pool
All of the alleles in a population
Allele frequency
Measures how common an allele is in a population.
Evolution (In genetic terms)
Occurs when there is a change in allele frequency in a population
Gene Flow
A change in allele frequency in a population due to the transfer of alleles from one population to another.
Genetic Drift
A change in allele frequency in a population due to random sampling
Genetic equilibrium
A state in which the allele frequency remains constant Evolution DOES NOT occur
Speciation
The process of forming a new species.
Reproductive Isolation
Occurs when members of different populations can no longer mate successfully.
Behavioral Isolation
Species are isolated from each other because they have different behaviors, such as different mating rituals.
Temporal Isolation
species are isolated from each other because they mate at different times of the day or year.
Geographic Isolation
Species are isolated from each other geographically (land, rivers, mountains, canyons, etc.)
