Variation and evolution. Flashcards
What is variation?
The differences in phenotypes within a species.
Heritable variation meaning.
Can be passed on to offspring
Genetic differences caused by crossing over, independent assortment, sexual reproduction, epigenetic differences.
Non-heritable meaning.
Cannot be passed onto offspring
Differences caused by the environment.
Continuous variation meaning.
Many intermediates/take lots of possible values
Polygenic (controlled by many genes)
Phenotype influenced by the environment
Forms a normal distribution curve.
Discontinuous variation meaning.
Characteristics have no intermediates
Monogenic (controlled by 1 gene)
Gene expression not influenced by the environment
Drawn as a bar chart.
Intraspecific competition meaning.
Between members of the same species.
Interspecific competition meaning.
Between members of a different species.
