Variation and evolution Flashcards
What is variation?
differences between individuals of the same species
What is variation the results of?
Genetic information and environment
What is plant growth effected by? (environmentally)
- competition for water
- comp for light
- air or soil temp
- aspect of slope (eg south facing sun)
What are the two types of variation?
- Continuous (controlled by more than one set of genes
- Discontinuous (controlled by one set of genes (eg blood groups)
What is asexual reproduction?
Only one parent, genetically identical to parent, no variation between offspring (clones)
What is sexual reproduction?
Two parents, genetically varied offspring
What is evolution?
Gradual change in species over time
What are all the steps of natural selection?
- variation appears in a population
- some have a characteristic that gives them an advantage
- competition for survival
- individuals that survive are more likely to reproduce and pass advantageous gene to offspring
- over time advantageous gene becomes common
What are the two different variations?
Continuous and discontinuous
What is continuous variation?
the differences are quantative e.g height
What is discontinuous variatoon?
the differences are categoric e.g blood type
