monoclonal antibodies (and other shtuff) Flashcards
Define ‘monoclonal antibodies’
identical copies of one type of antibody
What five steps are taken in the formation of monoclonal antibodies?
- antigen is injected into mouse
- mouse naturally produces lymphicytes which produce antibodies specific to antigen
- spleen cells which produce lymphocytes removed
- spleen cells are fused w/myeloma cells to form hybridoma cells which divide
- hybridoma cells divide and produce millions of monoclonal antibodies specific to antigen
Define genetic profiling
the cutting of DNA into short pieces that are then separated into bands
define genetic modification of crops
transferring genes artificially from one species to another
what are some advantages of GM crops
plants are resistant to herbicides
increased yield
what are some disadvantages of GM crops
health of eating them
unknown long-term effects
creation of superweeds reistant to herbicides
What is the order of the reflex arc?
So - Stimulus
Real - Receptor
Slim - sensory nuerone
Really - Relay neurone
Makes- Motor neurone
Easier - Effector
Right - Response
