variables, sig figs, metric conversions Flashcards
how can you convert between smaller/larger numbers?
KHD-DCM
rounding with sig figs:
look at the number after the place we round to. if it is above five, round up. if it is below five, leave alone
adding/subtracting sig figs:
round to the fewest decimal places
multiplying/dividing:
round to the fewest sig figs in the data
rounding exceptions:
conversion factors (1cm/10mm); counted numbers (6 students); zero
do the units change in the answer?
only the multiply and divide units change
what is science?
a system of knowledge and the methods you use to find knowledge
quantitative:
numerical
qualitative
descriptive
technology
the use of knowledge to solve practical problems
science is divided into two types
natural/social
three branches of science
physical, earth/space, life
scientific method?
a systematic procedure for collecting/analyzing data
scientific theory?
proved explanation for a set of observation or experimental results
hypothesis
proposed answer to a question
independent variable
the variable that changes in an experiment
dependent variable
the variable that you meausre in an experiment
controlled variable
the variable that stays the same
kinetic theory
all particles of matter are in constant motion
model
a representation of a real-life problem/object
