Variables! Flashcards
IV
Event that is directly manipulared by researcher or changes naturaly to have an effect on the DV
DV
Measured by the researcher and has been caused by a change to the IV
Operationalisation of IV and DV
Act of a researcher clearly defining the variable in termns of how they are being measured
Defined and measurable
Extraneous variable
Any other variable that is not the IV that affects the DV and doesn’t vary systematically w the IV
eg age
Don’t confound the results of the study but just make it harder to detect
Confounding variable
Varies systematically w the IV
Makes it difficult for the researcher to be sure of the origin of the impact of the DV
partcipant variable
this refers to the ways in which each participant varies from the other, and how this could affect the results
situational variable
factors in the environment that can unintentionally affect the results of a study
experimenter/research variable
confounding variables that refer to the experimenters themselves that can be measured.
