Self-report techniques! Flashcards
Self report techniques
Questionnaire
structured interview
unstructured interview
self report str
allows access to what people think and feel to their experiences and attitudes
self rep lim
social desirability bias: ppl may not supply truthful answers
lack validity: ppl sometimes dont know how they feel and make their answer up
cannot be generalised: sample of ppl may lack representativeness
Questionnaire
Data collected through use of written questions
Designed to collect info ab a topic
Permit researcher to discover what people think and feel
Can be objective and scientific way of conducting research
Questions always pre-determined
questionaire strengths
Can be distributed to large numbers of people cheap and quick
= can collect data from a large sample of people
Respondents may be more willing to give personal info in a questionnaire than in an interview, where they may feel self-conscious and cautious
questionnaire limitations
Biased sample
- only ppl who can read and write and have the time to fill them in
Unstructured interview
The interview starts out w some general aims and possible some questions
Lets the interviewee’s answers guide subsequent questions
unstructured interview str
More detailed info bc tailored to responses
unstructured interview lim
Require more skill than structured- requirement for a well trained interviewer makes unstructured more expensive
more likely to lack objectivity: bc of instantaneous nature w no time for interviewer to reflect on what to say
Structured interview
Any interview where the questions are decided in advance
structured interview str
Can be easily repated bc questions are standardised= answers from diff ppl can be compared
easier to analyse than unstr bc answers are more predictable
structured interview lim
Lim: Low reliability when comparing bc interviewers may have behaved diff
Interviewer bias: interviewers expectations may influence answers interviewee gives
