Correlations! Flashcards
Correlation
Determining the association between two variables
Zero correlation= co-variables not linked
Positive correlation= co-variables increase together
Negative correlation= as one co-variable increases, the other decreases
Correlational hypothesis
States the expected association between the co-variables
eg: Age and beauty are positively correlated (pos correlation, directional hypothesis)
Scattergrams
A correlation can be illustrated using a scattergram
Scatter of the dots indicate the degree of correlation between co-variables
Use a correlation coeffieicent to decide whether there is a meaningful correlation
Correlation coefficient
A number between +1 and -1 that tells us how closely the co-variables in a correlational analysis are linked
(+1 is perfect positive correlation and -1 is a perfect negative correlation)
Use a statistical test to calc correlation coefficient
Correlations str: trends
Used to investigate trends.
If a correlation is signif then further investiagtion is justified
If a correlation is not signif then you can probable rule out a causal relationship
Useful in psychological research
Correlation lim: Cause and effect
Can’t determine cause and effect,
can only determine correlation but ppl assume causal relationships.
Causal connection may be bc of intervening variables (unkown variables which can explain who the co-variables are linked
Correlation str: repeatability
procedures in a correlation can usually be easily repeated
= findings can be confirmed
AO3: correlations
str: trend
str: repeatable
lim: cause and effect
