Informed consent
An informed consent form provides a written description of what participants can expect during the experiment, including potential risks and implications of the research.
It also lets participants know that their involvement is completely voluntary and can be discontinued without penalty at any time.
Deception
A participant is not told the true aims of a study (e.g. what participation will involve) and thus cannot give truly informed consent.
Researchers pov: necessary to decieve partcipants otherwise they may alter their behaviour and study could be meaningless
Reasonably acceptable to withold some details of aims but less acceptable to delibarately provide false info
From participants pov: deception is unacceptable
- deception prevents ppl being able to give informed consent
- can also lead to ppl seeing psychologists as untrustworthy
Right to withdraw
Participants can stop participating in a study if they are uncomfortable in any way. This is especially important in cases where it was not possible to give fully informed consent.
Participants should also have the right to refuse permission for the researcher to use any data they produced.
Researchers pov: if ppl leave, the results will be biased bc the participants who stayed are more obedient
Participants pov: should always be allowed to wdraw incase decieved ab aims or proc, or if actual experience feels different. Can be compromised by payment or rewards
Protection from harm
During a reasearch study, participants should not experience negative physical or physchological or physical effects, such as physical injury, lowered self-esteem or embarassment
