Validity Flashcards
internal validity
research is measuring what it claims to measure
external validity
research reflects what’s going on in world outside the research:
ecological= research scenario reflects behaviour in real world
population= sample selected reflects target population
ways of dealing with issues of validity
researcher bias- double-blind condition OR using researcher who isn’t aware of hypothesis
demand characteristics- use ID or MP design- if not possible, use ‘mild deception’
social desirability- informing Ps answers are confidential. maybe ‘lie’ scale if using questionnaire
assessing validity
face validity = whether test appears to measure what it claims to
content validity = ask expert to check test is valid
construct validity = whether overall results reflect phenomena as a whole (external validity)
concurrent validity = validate a measurement by comparing it with an established measurement that has known validity
predictive validity = degree to which a test accurately forecasts a future outcome
