What is Leucorrhoea?
Leucorrhoea is the physiological vaginal discharge
What produces grey-white discharge, has a fishy odor but does not cause itch?
Bacterial vaginosis
What produces a grey-green discharge with a fishy odor and itching present?
Trichomoniasis
What is the normal pH of leucorrhoea? Function of this pH?
pH 4.0 to 4.5.
This pH creates a hostile environment for the growth of pathogens
In premenarchal and postmenopausal women, what is the estimated pH of the vagina?
Premenarchal and Postmenopausal women have lower oestrogen levels and the vaginal pH will be 4.7 or more.
What is asked in the history taking of those who presented with vaginal discharge?
The onset, duration, colour, consistency, odour, cycle changes, and exacerbating factors (such as post sex)
What is tested for in endocervical swabs?
Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea
What is tested for in high vaginal swab?
Vaginal candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis, as well as Strep pyogenes/Group B strep
What is the treatment of bacterial vaginosis?
Oral or topical Metronidazole
What is the treatment of Candidiasis?
Anti-fungals like Clotrimazole
What is the treatment of Chlamydia?
Doxycyclin or STAT Erythromycin
What is the treatment of Gonorrhoea?
IM Ceftriazone or STAT Erythromycin
What is the treatment of Trichomoniasis Vaginalis?
Oral Metronidazole
What is the cause of vaginal discharge containing faeces?
An anal fistula
