causes persistence of columnar cells in upper 2/3 of vagina that is derived from mallarian duct
Vagina embryology
upper 2/3: mallarian duct (columnar in fetus -> stratified squamous in adults)
lower 1/3: urogenital sinus (stratified squamous)
Adenosis risk
increased risk of clear cell adenocarcinoma
DES-exposed mothers have a slightly increased risk of
breast carcinoma
Embryonal rhabodomyosarcoma
pathology
population
grape-like mass in vagina (or penis)
usually girls
Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma
defining cell
staining
rhabdomyoblast
desmin and myogenin +
Presentation of vaginal embryonal rhabdomyocarcoma
vaginal or penile bleeding
PE shows grape like mass
