Vaccination And Immunity Flashcards
Immunity
Having the needed antibody in your blood stream
Secondary immune response
The much faster and heavier response to pathogens due to memory cells being present
Natural immunity
Without medical intervention
Artificial immunity
Gained with medical intervention
Active immunity
Produced by your own body and plasma cells
Passive immunity
Antibodies Gained from outside the body
Monoclonal antibodies
Synthetically made antibodies used for treating cancers
How are monoclonal antibodies made?🐁
Plasma B-cells from rats or rabbits are taken and fused with cancerous cells and the antibodies are specifically made to bind to surface proteins of cancer cells
What do monoclonal antibodies do to cancer cells?
one of:
- combine them with radioactive compounds
- attach a toxin to them
- start a complement cascade
- attach an antigen to them to make phagocytes engulf them
- can seek changed fasr receptors and initiate apoptosis
Herd immunity
The immunity acquired by those unable to be immunised from the community being immunised
