Pathogens Flashcards
Pathogens
Biological agents that are capable of replication and impair the normal function of its host.
Prions
A pathogen that’s made up entirely of proteins and can convert proteins in the brain to other prions. The body doesn’t have have enzymes that digest these so they build up and destroy neurons
Vrisues
Pathogens which need to be inside other cells to replicate. They have enzymes which they use to hijack the cell and make it produce more viruses
Bacteria and their features:
Pathogens that can reproduce independently and don’t have membrane bound organelles
Features:
- suckers and hooks to stick to the body
- flagella for locomotion and movement
- high surface area to volume ratio to make it easier for them to get nutrients
- reproduce by binary fission
- made of peptidoglycan
Fungi
Eukaryotic pathogens that have a chitin wall and can infect cells
Protozoa
Unicellular eukaryotes that can’t infect plant, animal or fungus
Oomycetes
Pathogens that inhibit apoptosis in plants
Worms
Parasitic worms that can regulate the immune system so that response against them is suppressed
Viroids
Pathogens to plants and compete for nucleotides to from viroid bundles similar to tumours
