UV Lecture Flashcards
What are the two types of radiation?
Ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation
What are two examples of ionizing radiation?
X-rays and gamma rays
What is an example of non-ionizing radiation?
UV
What is the UV wave length?
15-400 nanometers
What happens to wave lengths that are below 200 nm?
it is absorbed by air and does not reach living organisms
What is UVC?
200-290 nm. most lethal- biocidal
What is UVB?
290-320 nm. can cause DNA damage.
What is UVA?
320-400 nm. not readily absorbed.
How is UV light lethal?
UV light induces thymine- dimers in DNA which causes mutation and death
What is photo reactivation?
when exposed to light, photolyases are activated
What do photolyases do?
they split the dimer and restore the DNA
What is dark repair?
dimer is removed by endonuclease, DNA polymerase replaces the nucleiotide and then ligase
What are the uses of UV light for disinfection?
heat sensitive solutions, hospital OR, food processing, water disinfection
What are the two limitations of using UV?
it affects humans and doest penetrate well
