Chemical Control Flashcards
What are the uses of disinfectants?
inanimate objects/ surfaces, not on skin
What are examples of disinfectants?
control III, lysol, bleach
What are the uses of antiseptics?
living tissue is OK, no ingestion
What are examples of antiseptics?
iodine, mouth wash, H2O2, alcohol
What are the uses of preservatives?
ingestible
What are examples of preservatives?
organic acids (sorbic and propionic)
What are the uses of antimicrobial chemotherapeutic agents?
ingestible made to resolve infections in humans
What are antibiotics?
produced by other life forms (bacteria, fungi)
What is an example of antibiotics?
penicillin G
What are semi-synthetics?
modified antibiotics
What is an example of a semi-synthetic?
ampicillin
What are synthetics?
completely synthesized in a lab
What is an example of a synthetic?
sulfa drugs
What does bacteriocidal mean?
result in death
What does bacteriostatic mean?
temporarily inhibits growth
What media is used in the Kirby-Bauer test?
mueller hinton agar
What does Mueller-Hinton Agar have?
a standard thickness, pH, and chemical composition
What is the procedure of the Kirby-Bauer test?
disk diffusion method
- culture is inoculated uniformly over entire plate
- disk with various agents placed on the surface
- incubated for 48 hours at 37C
What is the theory of the Kirby-Bauer test?
During incubation the agent diffuses from the disc and if the agent inhibits growth it causes a zone of inhibition
What is the minimum inhibitory concentration?
concentration at the edge of the zone of inhibition
What is the use of the Kirby-Bauer test?
determine if bacteria is susceptible or resistant to a drug
