O2 Classification Required Flashcards
What do aerobes use?
Oxygen
What is a microaerophile?
They grow best in an atmosphere with high CO2 and low O2
Anaerobes….
do not use Oxygen
What is an obligate anaerobe?
Can not tolerate O2
What are aerotolerant anaerobes?
Can tolerate O2
What are facultative anaerobes?
They prefer O2 but are fine without it
When culturing anaerobes, How do your reduce the media?
It contains chemical reagents that combine with free O2 and change the O2 into water. This brings the concentration of O2 down
What does Fluid Thioglycollate Media (FTM) contain?
A thyoglycollate, agar, resazurin
What does Na thyoglycollate do?
Combines with O2 and removes it
What does agar do in FTM?
Added to reduce diffusion of O2 into media
What does resazurin do?
O2 indicator. When O2 is present it turns pink. When O2 is not present it turns colorless
In an anaerobic jar, what does the anaerobic bag do?
Remove oxygen
What is the O2 indicator in an anaerobic jar?
Methylene blue pill. When O2 is present it is blue. When O2 is absent it is colorless. Since the pink is pink, when O2 is present it is a purple pill and when O2 is absent it is a pink pill.
What is the candle jar?
You light a candle in a jar and when O2 is low the flame goes out
What does the candle jar provide?
It provides an environment with low O2 and high CO2
