Utilitarianism And Whistle Blowing Flashcards
What should employers decide before reporting the problem?
What would be in the companies best interests
An extreme example of whistle blowing not being in the companies best interests
If some one were to report a leak of waste products into a nearby river, this may cost the company millions of pounds in fines which could result in some workers being laid off, if no one is harmed by the leak then surely it is in everyone’s best interest to cover it up
How may a rule utilitarian respond to the pollution hypothesis?
Need to consider the wider impact rather than considering the impact on the company alone. If the leak is not reported then how are we to know what is harming our food supply for example. It would then be in everybody’s best interests to report the leak.
