Question Mark Use
Used to indicate the end of a question. (These end sentences.)
Full Stop Uses
Used to indicate the end of a sentence.
Exclamation Mark Uses
Used to indicate an exclamation. (They end sentences.)
Comma Uses
Marks a slight break between different parts in a sentence. They are used for things like separating items in lists, separating additional information, to introduce direct speech and more.
Apostrophe Uses
They can be used to show possession, for example: It was cold at Ben’s party. To show omission, for example: he’ll leave soon. He’ll is short for he will.
Elipse
Usually indicates an intentional end of a word, sentence or paragraph.
Hyphen Uses
Link words or parts of words. Often used to indicate that they have a comman meaning.
Semi colon Uses
Marks a break in a sentence that’s stronger than a comma but not as strong as a full stop.
Colon Uses
Three main uses: To introduce lists, between two main clauses and before a quotation or direct speech.
Brackets Uses
Used to separate off information that isn’t essential to the meaning of the rest of the sentence.
Quotation Marks Uses
Used to indicate direct speech.
Dash
Used to break up the sentence when you wish to change the thought:
I thought I would buy Cathy an anniversary present—and then I lost my wallet.
