What are conjunctions?
Conjunctions are joining words. They can be used to separate groups of words, single words or whole sentences.
Most common conjunctions
After,for,as,though,when,although,because,or,unless,while,and, but,so,until,yet.
Conjunctions joining single words
Fred went to the shopping centre. Ginger went to the shopping centre.
Using a conjunction this becomes:
Fred AND Ginger went to the shopping centre.
Conjunctions joining groups of words.
When all the qualities describing a person,animal, place or thing are of equal weight, we use and:Jimmy is fast, talented AND tall.
When the qualities are being contrasted we use but: Michel is talented BUT lazy.
Used to join groups of words that don’t make sense on their own: Jenny painted her nails while the orchestra played.
Conjunctions joining sentences
Used to join two sentences that contain related information: Louise is the captain of the Victorian netball team.Laura is the captain of the Australian netball team.
This becomes:
Louise is the captain of the Victorian netball team although Laura is the captain of the Australian netball team.
