What are Colons and what are they used for?
A
Colons are used to:
- Introduce lists: Today I want to: clean my room,have a shower, etc
- To reveal an answer: Elephants have one great enemy: humans
- When the 2nd part of the sentence elaborates the 1st: it was a time of great unrest in the school: students and staff awaited the arriveal of their new principal.
- To introduce a quotation: The famous author, Jane Kennedy wrote:”I want to eat cake.”

What are semicolons and how are they used?
A
A semi colon is used to show the connection between two statements. You use a semi colon when:
- Your sentence contains an introductory phrase such as therefore, however, in fact etc.. I was looking forward to the move; however it was canceled.
- In a list between items that already contain commas: They visited Melbourne, Victoria; Brisbane, QLD; Adelaide, SA and Hobart, Tas.
- To separate ideas of equal importance in a sentence: It was a marvellous opening ceremony; the Australians looked very stylish in their team uniforms.
