17/18- Apostrephes Flashcards
When do you use apostrophes and what are their rules.
1- To show that letters have been admitted in a contraction; that is when words are shortened: is not=isn’t, would have= would’ve etc.
2- to show that numbers have been omitted in dates: My team won the grand final in ‘14.
3- When we want our readers to hear the language as it is written. This can be effective when we are writing dialogue or slang: Tommy drawled, ‘I reckon we might be bringin’ the horses.’
4- To show posssesion: Anthony’s favourite toy is his car.
5-In singular nouns we add a s or use an apostrophe: Charles’s pen or Charles’ pen.
6- Plural nouns you write the plural form of the word and add an apostrophe: the boys’ tickets were lost. The men’s hats were blown away.
