What is the CG Use of Force Policy?

What are the guiding Principles of Use of Force Policy?
“Only that Force Reasonably Necessary under the circumstances may be used.” “Force shall not be used where assigned duties can be discharged without it.” “Excessive force may never be used…” “…however, nothing in the application of the Coast Guard’s Use of Force Policy shall be construed as to require personnel to meet force with equal or lesser force.”
Define Force:
Getting someone to do something they normally would not do.
Define Reasonable:
Decision making acceptable to the general public.
Define Necessary:
Essential to accomplish task; logically unavoidable; you have to do it to complete your job and there is no alternative.
Guiding principle on engagement:
“Coast Guard units must be ready to defend themselves at all times…”
Guiding principle on Duty to Retreat
“…personnel do not have a duty to retreat to avoid LE situation justifying the use of force, including deadly force.”“…retreat may be an option and may be the most reasonable choice.”
Guiding Principle for Individual Self Defense
“In the exercise of individual self-defense, personnel may use all available means…” (Anything available may be used as a weapon if necessary)
Does a BTM need approval from BO for use of force?
In most cases the Rules Governing Use of Force will not require BTM to seek approval from higher authorities. –Circumstances and time permitting, consulting superiors is encouraged.
Guiding principle on warning shots
