A
A specific legal status granted by authorities to person requesting protection from persecution or torture, who meet the definition of a refugee under U.S. law.

Is the Coast Guard ever authorized to grant asylum?
A
No, if a request for asylum is made Coast Guard has to follow steps for the proper agencies to be notified.

If the request being made for safe housing does it still count as a request for asylum?
A
No, the word asylum must specifically be used.

What two steps my a Boarding Team take when given a request for asylum?
A
- Notify TACON immediately.
