Hazardous Situations in Confined Spaces Flashcards
Define Confined Spaces.
Spaces large enough to allow person to enter and work, has limited or restricted means for entry and exit, and it is not designed for continuous human occupancy
Define Enclosed Spaces.
Any space, other than confined, that is enclosed by bulkheads, and possibly overhead.
Give some examples of confined spaces.
Pump room, storage lockers, tanks, voids, crawl spaces
Give some examples of enclosed spaces.
Cargo holds, tanks, quarters, machinery and boiler spaces
What are shared characteristics of Confined and Enclosed spaces?
Contains or potential to contain hazardous atmosphere, contains materials with potential for engulfing, internal configuration that could trap or asphyxiate the enter-er.
Spaces classified as confined or enclosed shall be ____ and ______ by a competent person to determine the atmosphere’s oxygen content and other potential hazards prior to initial entry.
Visually inspected and Tested.
Who is considered a
competent person in regards to testing confined and enclosed spaces?
Certified industrial hygienist, marine chemist, gas-free engineer, or Coast Guard deemed competent person
What are some physical hazards one may encounter in confined or enclosed spaces?
Exposed wiring, broken ladders, leaking oil, etc…
How is intrinsically safe equipment marked?
Green Dot
If equipment or wiring is not intrinsically safe, what will happen?
Causes ignition of atmospheric element
Gas Alert Quatro or 4Gas Analyzer monitors what four things?
Oxygen levels are within appropriate range (19.5-22%), hydrogen sulfide limits, carbon monoxide limits, and detects Lower Explosive Limits- not to exceed 10%
What piece of equipment does the Coast Guard use to escape a hazardous space?
Emergency Escape Breathing Device (Respirator)
