Labor Management Relations Act
1947
AKA - Taft-Hartley
Placed controls on Unions. Outlawed “Closed Shops” that require union membership to work at a company
Labor Management Report & Disclosure Act
1959
AKA - Landrum Griffin
Protects union members against corrupt union laws
National Labor Relations Act
1935
AKA - Wagner Act
Allows the right for employees to unionize for collective bargaining
Says employer must negotiate in good faith when an employee chooses to unionize
Requires unions to treat all employees equally
**Usable for all organizations where work is done in the US
Norris Laguardia Act
1932
Prohibits “yellow dogging” - requiring employees to agree to not join a union;
Legalized peaceful protests, strikes & boycotts
Defined “labor dispute” as any disagreement about working conditions
Child Labor Laws (Nat’l)
Under 18 - can’t work hazardous job
14 & 15 year olds - Cannot work more than 3 hours on a school day/18 hrs/week during school; more than 8 hours/day (40 hrs/week) when school is out; between 7pm - 7 am (except during the summer)
Wagner-Peyser Act
Created Employment Service Offices to help with unemployment
Davis Bacon Act
Requires laborers & mechanics on federal projects funded over $2k be paid the prevailing local wage and benefits
ERISA
Employee Retirement Income Security Act
Does not require any employer plans but sets standards for pension, life insurance, 401K offerings, etc.
Drug Free Workplace Act
Applies to organizations receiving grants from the federal government. If covered, an employer has to have a written policy and comply with organized and random drug tests of employees.
Enforcement is handled by the OFCCP (Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs)
