Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures

Four Fifths Rule
States the percentage of selection from a minority group should be at least 4/5 of the selection from the majority group
Alternative Recruiting
Finding applicants from temp or intern positions
Outsourcing

offshore - located in a distant country
Job Sharing
When 2 people do the job normally performed by 1 person on a part-time basis
Behavioral Interview
When interviewers ask a candidate to use examples from their past of how the performed a task or handled an incident. Related to the STAR method (Situation/Task, Action & Result).
*Tends to have high validity
Situational Interview
Relates to asking about hypotheticals situations
*May neglect past work experience
Panel Interview
Conducted by a group
*helps eliminate personal bias
Employment at Will
Common law doctrine that states employers have the right to hire, promote, demote or fire whomever they choose; and employees are free to leave whenever they choose
presumed when a written agreement does not exist
Implied Contract
Inferred from an employer conduct and actions
Express Contract
A formal agreement that outlines the details of the employment arrangement
Semi Structured Interview
occurs when an interviewer has a guided conversation that involves broad questions and new questions come about from the discussions taking place
Structured Interview
Interviewer has a list of specific job-related questions asked of all applicants
Non Directive Interview
Utilizes questions that are developed from an applicant’s answer to previous questions
Unstructured Interview

Availability Analysis
Examines internal and external population of women & minorities to determine their theoretical opportunity for employment
*major element of an affirmative action plan
Utilization Analysis
Compares the availability of women and minorities to their current representation within each group at the company
Job Group Analysis
A list of all titles that comprise each job group - grouped according to whether they have similar content, responsibilities, compensation and opportunities for advancement
Medical Exams
Medical exams can only be performed after a job offer is made, the exam must be job related and the results cannot be shared with the employer (only a pass/fail designation)
