French & Indian War
war between British and French who both claimed the land by the Ohio River Valley which caused conflict
Washington Fails
Washington attacks a group of Frenchmen. He senses a French counter attack and builds Fort Necessity, but is eventually forced to surrender
Treaty of Paris 1763
ended the war and gave all French land east of Mississippi to British and everything west to Spain
Proclamation of 1763
prevented colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mts to protect them from Natives
Sugar Act 1764
lowered tax on molasses in hopes that it would stop colonial smuggling
Stamp Act
forced colonists to buy a stamp for every piece of paper they purchased to help repay debt from the war
Colonists’ Reaction to the Stamp Act
Legislatures: state legislatures stated that they were the only ones who could tax colonists
Violence: Sons of Liberty protested through violence and attacked stamp collectors
Boycotts: refusal to buy British goods was very effective
Townshend Acts 1767
Charles Townshend & Parliament: placed tax on different goods
Colonists felt that it violated their rights because they had no representation in British Parliament
Tea Act 1773
British lowered the cost of tea, but colonists could only purchase it from the British East India Company
Boston Tea Party
Dec 6, 1773: Sons of Liberty dumped 90,000 lbs of tea into the Boston Harbor to protest the Tea Act
Many prominent leaders disagreed about the tea party but John Adams praised it
Civil Disobedience
refusal to comply with certain laws/pay taxes as a peaceful form of protest
Intolerable Acts
designed to punish Massachusetts: British closed the Boston Harbor until all lost tea was paid for
