Economic influence
The US has the largest economy in the world and has retained this fro, the 19th century.
Eg: the US economy constitutes a quarter of the global economy.
Economic influence rebuttal
The gap between the US and China is closing in recent years and their projections suggesting that China could take over the US in terms of being the world leading economy.
Eg: China has already passed the US in terms of buying power.
Military influence
The US has the most powerful and well funded military in the world today.
Eg: in 2023 the US spent just over $900 billion on their military , China coming 2nd spending around $220 billion.
Military influence rebuttal
Despite their spending the US’s military power isn’t limitless- the US has not yet managed to eradicate terrorism.
Eg: In recent years the US has tried to prevent countries such as Iran and North Korea from gaining nuclear weapons however have failed at this.
Political influence
The US is involved with a plethora of international political organisations such as the UN, the US is part of the UN Security Council alongside with Russia, France, China and the UK. Here they have the ability to impose political decisions regarding their country and others.
Eg: In 2017 the US had a resolution to impose new sanctions on North Korea in response to their missile tests which was unanimously accepted.
Political influence rebuttal
All permanent countries must agree with the US decisions and can use their veto to stop any action.
Eg: the US along with the UK and France wished to condemn and take action against the Assad regime in Syria however was vetoed by China and Russia.
