Alternative forms of governance Flashcards
Unionist point 1- Scotland would be worse of economically if independent due to fiscal deficit.
In 2019-20 Scotland’s fiscal deficit was £15 billion.
Nationalist point 1- Scotland may become better off economically if independent,
Ireland was poorer than England per capital before it became independent- but now has since grown richer per capita.
Unionist point 2- Scotland is democratic currently within the UK.
Johnson’s UK Gov only won 6/59 seats in Scotland but promised to prioritise protecting scotlands fishing industry in the UK-EU trade negotiations.
Nationalist point 2- Scotland has a democratic deficit.
A majority of all constituencies in Scotland voted to remain in the EU yet still had to leave as the majority of the UK had voted to leave.
Unionist point 3- Scotland benefits from sharing defence capabilities with rest of the UK.
The SNP plane for defence call for a single quadron of fast jets but the UK already has 4x that amount- most recently used in 2020.
Nationalist point 3- Scotland doesn’t need to be in the UK to be well defended.
Fast jets from several NATO countries are deployed to Estonia and Iceland to defend their airspace from Russia.
