Urinary System Flashcards
Why is glomerular filtrate important?
It increases the concentration of urine in the collecting duct
How many liters of blood flow through the kidneys each day?
180
What is the anatomy of the urinary system?
Urethra
Kidneys
Ureters
Bladder
What are the three functions of the urinary system?
Waste elimination:
osmoregulation of blood and water:
hormone secretion:
What is the role of the kidney in the urinary system?
filter your blood, removing wastes and extra water to make urine.
How does the urinary system work with other systems in the body?
It helps the body to eliminate liquid waste called urea, and to keep chemicals, such as potassium and sodium, and water in balance.
What are nephrons and their role in the urinary system?
nephron, functional unit of the kidney, the structure that actually produces urine in the process of removing waste and excess substances from the blood. There are about 1,000,000 nephrons in each human kidney.
How is urine formed?
glomerular filtration-Each nephron has a glomerulus, the site of blood filtration. The glomerulus is a network of capillaries surrounded by a cuplike structure, the glomerular capsule (or Bowman’s capsule).
reabsorption-When the filtrate exits the glomerulus, it flows into a duct in the nephron called the renal tubule. As it moves, the needed substances and some water are reabsorbed through the tube wall into adjacent capillaries.
secretion-The filtrate absorbed in the glomerulus flows through the renal tubule, where nutrients and water are reabsorbed into capillaries. At the same time, waste ions and hydrogen ions pass from the capillaries into the renal tubule.
What is ADH(antidiuretic hormone)?
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) helps regulate the amount of water in your body. It works to control the amount of water your kidneys reabsorb as they filter out waste from your blood.
What is urinalysis?
A urinalysis is a test of your urine. It is often done to check for a urinary tract infections, kidney problems, or diabetes.
What are nephron’s?
Small coiled tubules located within the kidneys. The basic structural and functional unit of the kidney and composed of a renal corpuscle and a renal tubule. They through a two step process: the glomerulus filters your blood, and the tubule returns needed substances to your blood and removes wastes.
