Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the anatomy of the skeletal system?
Bones
Bones marrow
Associated ligaments
Cartilages
What are the parts of the axial skeleton?
Skull
Parts of the vertebrae
Sternum
What are the parts of the appendicular skeleton?
Pelvis and limbs
How are bones formed?
They are formed by osteoblasts cells which are known as bone forming cells. These cells produce bone tissue and calcium is deposited on bone tissues and bone are formed.
How are bones remodeled?
This lifelong process where mature bone tissue is removed from the skeleton(bone resorption) and new bone tissue is formed(ossification). This process is regulated by keeping maintenance between bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts
What are the changes in bone development as a person grows and ages?
What are the different types of bones with the skeletal system?
Long bones:
Flat bones:
Irregular bones:
Sesamoids:
Short bones:
What is a cartilage, what do they do, and how they work?
A cartilage is a strong flexible connective tissue that protects your joints and bones. It also acts as a shock absorber and reduces friction at the end of your joints and prevents them from rubbing together
What are the three bones cells?
Osteocytes: regulate local mineral deposition and chemistry at the bone matrix level. Maintains bone tissue
Osteoblasts: forms bones
Osteoclasts: removes mature bones
What is the function of the skeletal system?
•provides support and protection for other tissues
•stores calcium and other minerals
•form blood cells
