Reproductive System Flashcards
Sperm is combined with other components to form semen. Where are these other components mainly formed?
In the male accessory glands
What is the main function of luteinizing hormone in the body?
To cause the egg to be released front the ovary
In the male body what is the role of the epididymis?
To store sperm
What is the anatomy of the reproductive system in females?
Biological term: ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina

How does the sexual reproduction process work in humans from development, puberty, and sexual maturity?
Development- A hormone secreted from sustentacular (Sertoli) cells trigger a degradation of the paramesonephric (Müllerian) duct, and therefore a uterus is unlikely to develop. At the same time, testosterone secretion stimulates growth of the mesonephric (Wolffian) duct, leading to development of the epididymis and vas deferens.
Puberty- a concerted release of hormones from the hypothalamus (GnRH), the anterior pituitary (LH and FSH), and the gonads (either testosterone or estrogen) is responsible for the maturation of the reproductive systems and the development of secondary sex characteristics, which are physical changes that serve auxiliary roles in reproduction
Sexual maturity-
How does the female reproductive system contribute to the reproduction and birth of an infant?
producing gametes (termed eggs or ova), regulating sex hormones, and maintaining fertilized eggs as they develop into mature fetuses ready for delivery.
How does the male reproductive system contribute to the reproduction and birth of an infant?
make, store, and ejaculate sperm, which fertilizes eggs produced by the female reproductive system in order to begin a pregnancy.
How does an infant develop from fertilization to birth and what happens in each trimester?
The germinal stage is the shortest stage of fetal development. It begins at conception when a sperm and egg join in your fallopian tube.
The embryonic stage lasts from about the third week of pregnancy until the end of the eighth week of pregnancy. The blastocyst begins to take on distinct human characteristics. It’s now called an embryo.
The fetal stage of development begins around the ninth week and lasts until birth. This is when the embryo officially turns into a fetus.
1st trimester-This is generally the first three months of pregnancy. During this trimester, the fertilized egg will change from a small grouping of cells to a fetus that begins to have human features.
2nd trimester-During this trimester, many people find out about the fetus’s assigned sex.
3rd trimester- the final stage that helps the fetus prepare for birth
