Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the anatomy of the endocrine system?
Pituitary gland
Thyroid gland
Pancreas
Adrenal glands
Gonads
Endocrine tissues in other systems
What are the functions of the endocrine system?
•Directs long term changes in the activities of other organ systems
•Adjusts metabolic activity and energy use by the body
•Controls many structural and functional changes during development
Describe hormones and their secretions?
chemicals called hormones and pass them straight into the bloodstream. Hormones can be thought of as chemical messages. The hormones communicate with the body by heading towards their target cell to bring about a particular change or effect to that cell. The hormone can also create changes in the cells of surrounding tissues
Describe endocrine glands and their secretions?
Pituitary gland-gonadotropins (LH and FSH), growth hormone (GH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), prolactin, antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin.
Thyroid gland-releases thyroid hormone (T4 and T3) which is required for metabolism and body homeostasis.
Parathyroid gland-calcium, phosphate and vitamin D regulation.
Adrenal glands-cortisol, aldosterone and sex hormones. Adrenaline
What are the different chemical signals?
What are receptors?
proteins either inside a cell or on its surface which receive a signal.
How does aging impact the endocrine system and hormones?
What are the feedback mechanisms?
Negative-opposes initial change, reduces output, brings body closer to its normal state
Positive-reinforces initial change, increases output, occurs when something needs to happen quickly, brings body away from its normal state
