Urinary System Flashcards

1
Q

Kidney

A
  • Cortex - protect kidney, house nephrons where filtration occurs
  • Medulla - reabsorption occurs here in the renal pyramids
  • Calyces - minor/minor calyces, renal pelvis where secretion occurs

A

Juxtamedullary nephron = reabsorption
Cortical nephrons = filtration

Q

Renal Corpuscle

A

Filtering station
- Glomerulus = where the filtration occurs
- Bowman’s capsule = captures and hold the filtration
○ Parietal = protect
○ Visceral = pass through of filtration
○ In-between where filtration is stored
- Juxtaglomerular apparatus: controls the amount of filtration that occurs

Q

Nephron Function

A
  • Proximal Tubule
    ○ Reabsorption, Where 65% of all the material we filter is reabsorb
    • Descending loop of Henle
      ○ reabsorption
    • Ascending loop of Henle
      ○ no reabsorption, Secretion
    • Distal tubule + Collecting duct
      ○ small amount of water is reabsorbed, but mostly Secretion

Q

Arteries of Kidney

A
  • Renal: enter kidney
  • Afferent arterioles
  • Efferent arterioles
    ○ Makes a high pressure system
  • Vasa recta + peritubular capillaries: reabsorption ends up here

A
  • brings urine from renal pelvis to urinary bladder
  • Transitional epithelium

Q

Bladder

A
  • stores urine
  • Trigone: detrusor muscle moves towards it (pulls bladder down)

Q

Urethra

A
  • bladder - excretion
  • Internal sphincter = automatic, smooth muscle, and response to pressure
  • External sphincter = somatic, skeletal muscle
