Pelvic nerves (S2,3,4)
Which nerve innervates the External Sphincter?
Pudendal nerve (S2,3,4)
What will a lower motor neuron lesion cause ?
Low detrusor pressure, overflow incontinence and lax anal tone ( cauda equina is an example of this)
What will an upper motor neuron lesion cause?
High pressure detrusor contractions and poor coordination with sphincters. Detrusor sphincter dyssynergia
Define stress incontinence
Involuntary leakage on effort or exertion, sneezing or coughing
Define Urgency Urinary incontinence
Involuntary leakage accompanied by urgency
What investigations may you do for incontinence?
Urine dipstick, frequency-volume chart, bladder diary
Name some conservative methods of management
Modify fluid intake, weight loss, stop smoking, decrease caffeine
How can stress incontinence be managed initially?
Pelvic floor muscle training (8 contractions 3 x a day)
What is intramural bulking agents?
improve the ability of the urethra to resist abdominal pressure by improving urethral coaptation
Name a pharmacological management for UUI
Anticholinergics that act on M2,M3 receptors
What is Enuresis?
Involuntary wetting during sleep at least 2x per week in children over 5 with no CNS effects
