Urinary Elimination Pt 2 Flashcards
Common Diuretic Classes
?
Are used to treat high blood pressure by reducing the amount of sodium and water in the body
Also dilate blood vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure
Thiazide diuretics
?
Reduce the amount of water in the body
Unlike other diuretic medicines, theses medicines do not cause ___ loss
Potassium-sparing diuretics
potassium
?
Cause the kidneys to excrete more urine by reabsorbing less water
This reduces the amount of water in the body and lowers blood pressure
Loop-acting diuretics
Medications that have significant interactions with diuretics include:
digoxin, antihypertensives, lithium, certain antidepressants (especially when taking thiazide or loop-acting diuretics), and the immunosuppresant cyclosporine, especially when the patient is taking a potassium-sparing diuretic
Common side effects of diuretics include:
weakness, muscle cramps, skin rash, increased sensitivity to sunlight (with thiazide diuretics), light-headedness, joint pain
