  • PO use only
  • MOA: local anesthetic of mucosa of urinary tract, relives pain, burning, frequency/urgency secondary to cystitis
  • Side effects/adverse reactions: red/orange urine, nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, hemolysis

Bethanechol

A
  • Urinary stimulant
  • Group: direct acting parasympthomimetic
  • Indication: hypotonic bladder, urinary retention, neurogenic bladder
  • MOA: increase tone of detrusor muscle
  • Contraindication: peptic ulcer
  • Side effects: GI distress, dizziness, fainting
  • Must take on an empty stomach

Oxybutynin

A
  • Urinary antispasmodic
  • MOA: anticholinergic, relaxes detrusor muscle to relieve bladder spasms
  • Indication: overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder
  • Contraindication: glaucoma, prostate problems (BPH)
  • Side effects: dry mouth, tachy, dizziness, fainting, blurred vision, constipation
