Urban Waste Flashcards
What are the 3 types of. waste
Industrial, Commercial and Personal
What is industrial waste?
Any waste that’s been produced in the manufacturing process or form industrial activity. Industrial waste can include scrap metal, solvents and chemicals which can be toxic or corrosive
What is commercial waste?
Waste that’s produced by businesses. Commercial waste is often food, paper, cardboard and plastics
What is personal waste?
Any waste produced by private homes. Including plastic bottles, food packaging, newspapers and food waste
What are the 4 largest components of waste
Organic Material, paper, plastic and glass
How much of waste is organic waste
46%
How much of waste is paper
17%
How much of waste is plastic
10%
How much of waste is glass
5%
What is a waste stream
The flow of waste from its origin through to its eventual disposal
What do waste Streams and components depend on
Economic characteristics, Lifestyles, Attitudes,
What happens when people get richer
They consume more goods, meaning that developed countries produce more waste
What do the components of waste depend on
The development level of the country. Developed. countries. are the main components of paper, organic material and plastic
what waste do people in rural areas produce?
Less than those in cities but organic waste and cities produce manufactured waster
What are the attitudes of those in developed countries?
Throw-away culture resulting in high waste levels such as when food is out of date
What is people’s waste like if they care for the environment?
more likely to reuse or recycle and have a decrease consumption of waste
What 7 methods can be used to dispose of waste better for the environment
1) Unregulated
2) Recycling
3) Incineration
4) Recovery
5) Landfill
6) Submergence
7) Trade
Explain unregulated
Waste dumped in places that aren’t official disposal sites can damage ecosystems
Explain recycling
Waste is reprocessed into new products. recycling reduces the demand for materials decreasing environmental. impacts. It uses less energy to produce so less greenhouse gases. Recycling requires separate collections and new facilities to produce waste
Explain incineration
Waste is burnt reducing the amount of waste going to landfill but emits greenhouse gases and cause air pollution. Waste burnt is used to generate electricity reducing fossil fuel use
Explain recovery
Uses waste to reduce the amount being sent to landfill meaning fewer natural resources. are exploited and goods are reused
Explain landfill
Waste is placed in disused mines, if sites aren’t regulated hazardous chemicals contaminate groundwater, and gases cause air pollution. SOme countries collects for energy production reducing air pollution and use of fossil fuels
Explain submergence
Disposing of waste by dumping it is illegal but common, submerged waste releases toxic and radioactive substances damaging oceans and ecosystems
Explain. Trade
Waste is bought and sold by countries. Developing countries. may not dispose hazardous waste safely meaning it damages local environments
