Urban environmental issues Flashcards
What can be a big problem in urban areas?
Atmospheric pollution
What is happening in developed countries?
Reliance on fossil fuels is decreasing and the use of less polluting energy sources has increased
What is happening in developing countries?
They rely heavily on fossil fuels to meet energy needs. Increase in industrial activity, car ownership and lack of regulation gives severe atmospheric pollution
What characteristics are prime for water pollution?
- Cities with high population density and make lots of waste
- Cities with lots of factories
What can water pollution cause?
Damages ecosystems and contaminated water causes health problems
How can water pollution be managed?
Through laws stopping discharge of untreated waste and treat wastewater. Strategies like catchment management and SUDS help
What happens in developed countries about water pollution?
There’s strict regulations about discharge of untreated water and pollutants in surface runoff causing pollution
What happens in developing countries about water pollution?
Lots of regulations and inadequate provision of treatment facilities. meaning untreated industrial waste and sewage enter watercourses and water pollution is common
When does urban dereliction happen?
Economic activity in urban areas declines and buildings become rundown.
What is the pattern of urban dereliction?
- Movement of manufacturing overseas
- Lots of people leave an area services decline and shops close
- Empty buildings and derelict areas often have problems with crime
Where is urban dereliction more common?
In developed countries where widespread deindustrialisation has occurred
What are strategies to manage urban dereliction
Redevelopment of former factories. into commercial and residential properties, the construction of new housing in derelict areas and green spaces
