urban form Flashcards
urban form=
refers to the physical characteristics of a city such as layout, size and land use
cities initally established near good water supplies, fertile soil, natural resources but now they have changed due to many factors
physical changes
TOPOGRAPHY- steep slopes make it harder to build on
WATER= lakes and seas limit urban growth in those areas
NATURAL RESOURCES-rich resources like coal encourage growth in size of population
LAND TYPE- ground surfaces are more difficult to build on like wetlands
human changes
PLANNING-urban expansion can be planned or not like slums
INFRASTRUCTURE-new developments built along transport links-linear growth
LAND VALUE- highest land value found in city centre so profitable buisnesses are located there
general land use patterns
- cities in developed countries tend to have a central buisness district
- houses generally increase in value further from CBD
land use patterns- developed vs developing countries
DEVELOPED- inner city=high land value so housing is poor and high density
-rural areas are less dense and have more open space
DEVELOPING-land value highest around city centre so high cost lux apartments
land value very low on outskirts so more informal housing
