town centre mixed development
-land use is mixed with residental, commercial and leisure
-they are planned by local councils with the aim to attract people back to the city
they build offices, apartments, green spaces and leisure facilites
cultural nad heritage quarters
-these focus on the history and character
-features things like theatres, galleries and historical buildings
-often developed by local councils to regenerate former industrial areas
-it helps attract tourism
NEGATIVE- not all towns and cities need cultural quarters and some simply create higher property value
fortress development
-they have lots of security like gated communities, cctv and guards often located in suburban areas of large cities
-only for rich who can afford it
NEGATIVE- causes social exclusion
edge cities
- areas of new offices, shops and leisure facilites that develop close to transport links
- mostly developed due to car owndership
- NEGATIVE- social segregation as wealthy people have moved leaving poorer people behind
gentrified areas
-gentrification is defined as buying and renovating properties in more run down areas by wealthy people
-gentrified areas have a large range of services
-it increases job opportunities
NEGATIVES- people on low income cant afford higher property price so are displaced which leads to social segregation
example of gentrified area- liverpool
- a way of regenerating inner city estates without displacing low income families is where british cities sell run down housing at low prices.
- in 2013 liverpool council sold 20 derelict homes in kensington for £1. to make this scheme there were basic rules:
- they had to live in the property for 5 years and had to show they were capable of doing the house up to a reasonable standard.
- the scheme has now been extended to other houses and shops to improve the built environment
fortress LA
-LA has developed a reputation as a city built on fear
-fear of gangs and homeless had led to:
gated communities
armed response security units
-greater use of CCTV
malls surrounded with metal fencing
LA- edge city
-in 2015 the core city of LA had a population of under 4 million. this is surrounded by a metropolitan area of nearly 18 million with more than 20 edge cities
