thunderstorms in urban areas Flashcards
1
Q
where they devlop
A
in hot humid air and characterised by violent and heavy precipitation
2
Q
formation of thunderstorms
A
- heating of air causes uplift which causes it to rise
- the air cools rapidly causing condensation and clouds to form
- this results in towering cumulrumbus clouds
- rapid cooling leads to the formation of water droplets
- raindrops are split in the updraught causing positive enrgy to build up
- this charge builds up and released to areas of negative change to cause lightning
- thunder occurs as a result of a sudden increase in pressure and temp to produce rapid expansion of air surrounding it
3
Q
link between thunderstorms and urban form
A
- urban areas 1-3 degrees warmer than surrounding area to cause rapid evaporation from more humid air
- updrafts of unstable air due to buildings which increases conventional uplift of hot humid air causing it to rise
- urban areas generate dust and pollution- this acts as condensation nuclei which encourages clouds to form
