- lack of space and going environmental awareness forced dutch government to take measures reduce their reliance on landfill
- the Netherlands only landfilled 2 to 3 % of total waste generation

landfill rules
A
- introduced a landfill ban in 1995
- introducing a landfill tax in 1996 on every tonne of material- this massively helped as it made it expensive to dump waste

incineration- AEB
A
in 1992, the city created AEB a waste to energy enterprise- its an incineration plant capable of producing 1 million mega watts of electricity annually.
- also used to create heating for communities
- 64% of waste ends up being recycled
- it also helps co2 emissions reduce as the plant has several functions which involved 438 kilo tons of co2 avoided annually

its both economically and environmentally better than landfill- incineration is still controversial- the dutch government set to target to reduce waste to incineration by 50%
